And Now It Starts

Obama-Emanuel-1.jpg

Well, the NYT moved pretty fast today in walking back their first visual swipe at the Obama administration.

The top screen shot, which led the on-line edition in the early afternoon, framed Obama's first political appointee, Rahm Emanuel (as well as Obama himself) as overly hard-baked, conniving and conspiratorial (even though their story yesterday emphasized how much Emanuel has smoothed out the rough edges over the years).

In the space of about an hour, however, swapping a Reuters shot for the AP selection on the home page and in the article, we saw a warmer, more collegial impression instead.

Sure, Emanuel isn't exactly Bambi, but no presidential Chief of Staff ever is. The larger point, however — with all the crucial problems and promise in the air — is that we don't need this kind of tone.

Rahm will be the yin to Obama’s yang. The hard edge that Obama needs but cannot dare to show. His own image will always be the calm, easy-going steady hand…

    R. Emanuel looks like the prince of darkness in the first shot, tempting Obama to sell his soul.

CHICAGO, Illinois (CNN) — Sen. Barack Obama spoke at a his first news conference as president-elect Friday afternoon.
The following is a transcript of the conference:
    - the last question;
Question: Mr. President-elect, do you still intend to seek income tax increases for upper-income Americans? And if so, should these Americans expect to pay higher taxes in 2009?
Obama: The — my tax plan represented a net tax cut. It provided for substantial middle-class tax cuts; 95 percent of working Americans would receive them.
It also provided for cuts in capital gains for small businesses, additional tax credits. All of it is designed for job growth.
My priority is going to be, how do we grow the economy? How do we create more jobs?
I think that the plan that we’ve put forward is the right one, but, obviously, over the next several weeks and months, we’re going to be continuing to take a look at the data and see what’s taking place in the economy as a whole.
But, understand, the goal of my plan is to provide tax relief to families that are struggling, but also to boost the capacity of the economy to grow from the bottom up.
All right. Thank you very much, guys

    Was the question answered ?

  • jtfromBC

A straight forward question receives a hundred and fifty word non-response, and a hasty exit.
Hey guys, is this an inauspicious beginning or what ?

  • Johanna

No, these are meant to be glamor shots of Emanuel. He looks quite good in both of them.

No, the question wasn’t answered, and it’s a good thing. Do the American people really need to know the exact date at which the richest among them will start paying more taxes? Is this the most urgent thing on people’s minds? Perhaps those who are making over $250,000–and that is hardly a majority of the population.
“Mr. President-Elect, when will you raise people’s taxes?” clearly seems to me to be a “gotcha” question, one that Obama was wise to avoid.

Making Him Do It ~ digby
    excerpt
“So, everyone needs to relax a little bit about the blogosphere criticizing Obama and the Democrats. We are necessary. If all Obama has is the Villagers and the right defining what change means, then those are the parameters within which he will have to operate. He needs us to “make him do it.”
“I’m sorry if that’s a buzzkill, but things move fast in politics and there’s no time to waste. The mandate is being defined as we speak. We can’t just sit back and bask in our glory while the villagers are busily narrowing Obama’s options.”

I know that my take on this is tempered by teaching Othello at this moment, but I sure saw the picture as setting up and Iago-Othello dynamic with Iago pouring poison in Othello’s ears. I found it framing a vision in spite of myself.

nelle, that was my immediate impression as well, although oddly enough I didn’t consciously make the “moor” connection until I read your comment. It could be that the implied relationship runs deeper than the superficial characteristics. Some might see a Jesus and Judas relationship.
I am more surprised that they “walked back” the image than that the image ran in the first place. That means that someone made a decision about the message who wasn’t involved in creating the message in the first place. Or something.

    Wake up.
