‘08 Closing Shots: Mother Sarah

palindisabled.jpg

“Don’t worry one bit about any crying baby,” Ms. Palin said. “That’s the sound of life. I love it, that’s good. I say that, too, because the next one crying could be my son.” — Sarah Palin. New Paris, PA.

This is the lead image in the last NYT Sarah Palin feature story prior to election. It deals with how she has drawn support based on her advocacy for special needs children.

This close-up feels like the final distillation of so many photo-ops of Palin we’ve studied since the RNC. What the image demonstrates — as the starry-eyed candidate poses with someone else’s special needs child — is how Palin, thoroughly glossy and made up with that far away gaze, became — among many things this election — the queen of the poster child.

Let’s also remember that Palin cut funding for all children’s health organizations in Alaska by a third.
This shows the true shallowness of her boast to be “for’ funding for special needs children!
As phony as the rest of her lies and half-truths.
I will be so happy to not have to listen to her whiny, irritating voice after the next couple of days.
And as the angry old guy McKrusty spends his last couple of speeches mocking and slamming Obama, O is going for the positive message:
We are not a blue and red america, not a rich and poor america, not (ad 5 or 6 more examples) WE ARE THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA!
Thank god we won’t have to listen to his angry old voice anymore either!

I find her captured detachment interesting. I’ve noticed it at the RNC when her newborn was kept up all night in a hellishly loud convention hall and during the presidential debate, when I’ve seen her 7 year old toting the baby around, or her other daughters (the eldest seems to have been disappeared), or when her children are paraded in front of crowds….it’s interesting.

I have yet to see a single photograph or video which captures either Palin adult – Todd or Sarah – actually looking AT a special needs child, Trig or someone else’s. Moreover, in every photo, Trig is seen carried like a toy – no one paying the least bit of attention to him or the fact that he is a living being and not just a stuffed toy.
I hope that the Palins are getting monitoring and attention from child therapists and social workers because to this trained eye, if the photographs and videos are representative of the treatment of the children, the children traveling with the adult Palins are being neglected.

karen – Re this “I’ve noticed it at the RNC when her newborn was kept up all night in a hellishly loud convention hall and during the presidential debate…”
Wow. Just wow. Disturbing. Words totally fail me except to say that I hope Annie is right and someone is paying attention to all of this.

I dunno ’bout “her advocacy for special needs children”.
I’ve got four family members (sister, brother, 2 bros in law) who work with special needs kids & young adults. My brother is on the road every week conducting workshops with special needs teachers, administrators & teachers of teachers around the country.
    They’d never heard of her.

  • desertwind

PS – She’s awful, but we shouldn’t be so quick to judge her personal parenting skills. Sometimes parents with lots of kids appear to not be paying attention to them, but they’ve got the radar going.

  • CatStaff

Gotta respectfully disagree with you there, desertwind. Case in point: Palin’s recent on-bus interview with Greta Van Susteren. Piper was sitting there trying to get either her mother’s OR father’s attention, both of whom were sitting right next to her. When Piper finally rested her head against her mother’s shoulder, looking exhausted, Palin absently gave the child a couple of back-handed pats on the cheek without breaking the never-ending flow of her words, or even looking down at the poor child. Piper continued to try to get her dad’s attention, all the while wiping her nose on her sleeve, apparently suffering from a cold.
I’ve never seen Palin actually hug any of these children, or look at them in any way that indicated she thought of them as anything but props. I realize that I can’t read her mind, but can only base my judgment on what I see. And if she wants to be a crappy parent, that’s her business. But she doesn’t then get to stand there like we’re all idiots and she’s Mother Earth because she spouts some BS about caring so deeply about special needs children.

Holding up a baby like that, and then not looking at it, it just weird. I mean, that’s what that “up by the face” position is especially FOR. You’re right in HIS face, he’s right in YOUR face.. you look at each other. It’s one of those primate things.

  • gulati

Yet, she couldn’t help but pimp her kid at our local rally.

Trig is not a child, he’s a prop!

I can only imagine that it takes all of one’s physical and emotional energy to campaign and travel full time. To add to that being the mother of a a special needs baby, a young child (Piper), the older children, and having a son who just left overseas must consume every ounce of extra reserves for the next ten, twelve, or twenty or so years. As a mama myself, and a practitioner of chinese medicine, I find it interesting to observe how Palin is standing under all this pressure. It does seem as if in the effort to appear as if family is all-encompassing in her life (i.e., as if the notion of family is simply the unbreakable fairy-tale facade in the fabric of life) makes Palin the ultimate uber-Mama. She is such a super-heroic woman that she can campaign 24-7, be Mom to all these children AND a high-needs baby, and be the ultimate dream candidate for the conservative right. She must be truly be in God’s hands.
When people become “born again” and understand that they are now somehow fulfilling God’s plan for their lives, they tend to put the realities of life on simmer. The child is crying, it’s okay because I’m doing God’s work and God will help me to calm this crying child.
My children aren’t getting the full attention from me they need. It’s okay because I’m fulfilling the promise of God, and God will ensure that my children are healthy, safe, and well fed.
I am the mother of a Down’s syndrome baby. I did not abort this baby like some women might have. I believe that God sent us this baby and it is part of His Plan. Therefore, I am now an advocate for special needs babies, as part of God’s plan for me to be Vice President of the United States.
This is the kind of thinking I imagine goes through her head. I was immersed in this thinking as a child. God’s will ran through every sentence of every day
It is not surprising that she pays little attention to her baby or her young children. The fact that she is not looking at this adorable baby’s face simply infers more about her heavenly ideals than the realities here on earth.

In many photos of her that I’ve seen, she looks like one of the participants in ‘Luncheon at the Boaring Party’ – no eye contact with anyone else. Is she always just looking at/for the next big thing? She’s certainly not in the moment.

  • lq

    Oops – Boating Party. gak.

Harry Shearer has said that the most addictive drug on earth is television appearances.
She actually looks ‘high’ here as if she’s drunk on adulation.
Josh Marshall is writing her off on her merits – fair enough. But the thing is she’s like Jenny Mccarthy. Jen never really had a talent, but her burning quest for notoriety and fame – her elemental urge to climb – gave us a series of loopy TV shows with her in them.
In economic terms, the ‘demand’ for Palin may not be high, but there’s plenty of ’supply’ because she has now become a TV appearance/crowd junkie.
As she said “This isn’t all for naught.” I’d take her at her word.

  • Sondra

To me it looks like her eyes are not starry, but glazed over and about to roll back into her head.

  • Cactus

Doesn’t the bible say, ‘by their works ye shall know them?”
Well, with the Palin children, oldest boy is in Iraq because he was in so much trouble the judge threatened jail or military and until he shipped out he was living in MI. Oldest daughter was drinking and using drugs and now pregnant at 15 or 16 (I’ve heard both). Youngest daughter (at 7) is frequently seen carrying Trig and according to photos, the only one showing him actual affection. It seems to this UNtrained eye that these folks would give ‘trailer trash’ a bad name.
