Biden – Palin Debate Preview #1: No Jack Kennedy

 Images 2004 09 21 Politics Campaign 21Deba.1.583

As a visual analogy, fair or unfair?  Predictive, misleading or a warning?

(image: Robert Maass/Corbis. 1988.  from NYT Kerry/Bush debate preview: In Presidential Debates, a Duel of Wits and Styles.  caption:  "HEATED DEBATES In 1988, when Dan Quayle suggested that his political experience was comparable to John F. Kennedy’s, Lloyd Bentsen shot back: "Senator, I served with Jack Kennedy. I knew Jack Kennedy. Jack Kennedy was a friend of mine. Senator, you’re no Jack Kennedy.")

Like a Counter-Reformation-style painting–which guided sixteenth-century viewers back to the Church hierarchy and thus to the salvation of their souls–this photograph brings the viewer into identification with the Passion of Dan Quayle. Although Lloyd Bentsen is larger than the other candidate in this photo, he seems subservient, as his profile and gaze are more like those of painted kneeling donors or dignitaries than a political equal. Perhaps the photo evoked feelings of empathy for Quayle–he was the sacrificial lamb. Which brings me to reconsider tonight’s “performance”….

I remember those debates. I remember that expression on Dan Quayles face at the moment of that zinger. It’s that sick feeling you get when you know you’ve been bested.
Despite the fact that he looks so callow, I almost feel sorry for him, seeing it again.

Damn, I had to look up Lloyd to recall that quote. And that is one for the history books. She should be mincemeat after tonight, unless she’s had prior access to the questions being posed.
