Your Turn: Red, White And Blue + White + Lot More Red. Oh Yeah, There’s McCain, Too.

Palin Mccain

I’m interested in your thoughts on this, especially as a follow-up to the red shoes post.  This was taken yesterday.

From NYT slide show:  Barbs on the Economy.

(image: Todd Heisler/The New York Times.  caption: At a rally in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Senator John McCain, the Republican presidential nominee, said that the chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission should be fired.)

White is a really interesting color choice for Palin; I’ve written about it here: http://snipurl.com/3ry8k It’s a wash-out color, so there are other reasons to choose it: White as purity and innocence, the color of snow in Alaska, a swing-vote-seeking not-red, not-blue; and the color of the people on the Republican ticket. But does white work in a mud-slinging, sullying campaign?
As for the red shoes: enough with the shoes! We’re in fetishist territory already!

It’s about vigor, framed by patriotism.
    McCain connects with (our) women.
    He’s our man.

To me, red signifies, (first) aggression, (second) anger, (third) bravado, (fourth) blood. I saw the Red Shoes as aggressive. Women have to be cautious with aggressive colors, ergo, we wear red most often as an accent; eg, shoes, scarf, handbag, gloves. Every woman I know has a red “power” suit in her closet, and rarely wears it. Thinking back to the New Yorker cartoon (yes, again), the red suit really “fit” the personality the cartoonist was, perhaps, trying to portray. I’m not sure I need the conditional “perhaps,” but I’m not the cartoonist. There was a Palin as predator flavor to that piece.
Palin’s white outfit here is, I think, meant to send her to the background. She’s been overpowering McCain of late, as reported in the press. So, she can be surrounded by color, but she’s not “figure” in this shot; she’s background. The white outfit helps her achieve that. But, also, I hear Palin isn’t polling very well right now – could be her color scheme intends to minimize her in that regard. Dunno. Not sure. Other than she is not intended to be the focus at this event.
McCain look solid, muscular, strong, certain, confident … in his well fitted blue suit. Somewhere I read there is a particular color of blue that marketers have found consumers identify with purity. It’s often used in the packaging of sugar – for some weird reason. Seems to me, McCain’s shirt is that shade of blue, but maybe that’s just the way my computer displays color. Interesting that McCain is all in blue – suit, shirt and tie. Looks good with his hair. He is not washed out. He is figure, not ground in this photo.

When did McCain become such a dream boat?
Look at the way those women just fawn and giggle over him.
Look at McCain just win over those women voters!

Found a link that might support some of what I was musing above:

A WHAT Administration? A WHO Administration?

    Uh-oh.
Gov. Sarah Palin is now talking about “a Palin and McCain administration.”
I’ve also heard her refer to McCain as “my running mate” — a term I don’t recall ever hearing a VP nominee use when discussing the guy at the top of the ticket.
Maybe the fact that the crowds are leaving after she speaks, while McCain is speaking, is getting to her.

    The link has video.

I wonder if the woman in red(?) who is standing next to Palin is mugging for a pic of her and Palin taken by someone in the crowd in front. Or she’s ‘posing’ with Palin for the NYT photographer. No one else that we can see seems to be paying much attention to McCain. It just ‘looks’ like they are. A lot of undirected activity.
Palin (or the campaign) may be trying to change the power dynamic with the white jacket, but it still appears to be skin tight, with a lot of evident anatomy. I think she also plays into the sexual thing with the little girl hair style. I’ve noticed a lot of the shots from the last two days have her hair very down (no topknot effect); I think it’s an even more girlish, coquettish look. She seems to be avoiding the power twist.

The white jacket looks like some flimsy disguise Palin’s about to burst out of.

All I’m seeing is some lesbo action in the background.

Okay, here’s going out on a limb without the credentials to do so…
Are the red accents a distraction for something more subliminal? I was cruising the WSJ for bailout specifics and ran into a photo of Bush, Cox, Paulson, and Bernake. (Search Google News for the precise article heading U.S. Bailout Plan Calms Markets, But Struggle Looms Over Details to get past the WSJ’s subscription filters**.) I was caught by the amount of blue in that photo. Blue as, honesty (purity), integrity, worthy of trust, safety? So, which is it we’re really supposed to “see” in the photo above? The red, or the blue? Is the red the distraction move that draws your eyes away from the magician’s sleight of hand?
**No. That maneuver is not ‘illegal.’ The WSJ’s content has been subscription free for awhile. They just make you work to get stuff. If you want it easy, then pay the subscription.

Last one, BAG, and I’ll stop spamming this thread. I made a number of claims about Palin in my first comment, and think I ought to offer a substantiation of the claims. Regarding Palin’s favorables see, here. On average, Palin is the least popular of all four P/VP candidates.

McCain Says One Thing and THEN Votes The Opposite! When you hear McCain talk, think — Wizard of Oz.

i’m interested in knowing your thoughts on the photo of obama in the gift shop in new mexico (part of the same ny times slide show – #10 of14).
jesus on the wall, cross behind obama, obama’s odd head-first walk, snakeskin over his head…
    what’s your take?

Palin’s white, fitted jacket and hair down seem to relegate her to a more junior position and IMO she does not look to be all that thrilled with it. She started out in her first speech in black with her hair up, in what was a clear attempt to get her to be taken seriously, to have more weight. White jacket and loose hair seem to connote a lightweight, to have the serious focus put back on McCain. The woman in red and the one next to her in blue look like fawning, uberfeminine fans with 8×10 glossies in hand. Maybe they came together and planned their outfits. All dressed up for the political rock concert and they wave the flag like fans hold lighters up at shows. McCain seems pretty happy- the crowds come back when Palin is there and he can pretend they are excited to see him. As for the red shoes, I’d be curious to know who picked them out. Pre-McCain Palin pictures show her in a dramatically diferent wardrobe. Since she became a candidate she has become a cartoon character and whenever she strays from earthy colors and into bright, plastic-shiny red pumps the effect is just heightened. I see her as extremely ambitious and she’ll do what they tell her to do to get the shot at power. Once she’s got it, look out. Her rigidity and self-righteous moral authority will switch back into high gear. Ditto for McCain. That’s why they both lie so easily and recklessly. They just tell themselves they are doing it fo the greater good.

Can Sara’s jacket be any tighter? I’m not trying to be snide, but it’s only an accident if you do it a few times. If everything in your wardrobe looks like this, then it’s a deliberate fashion choice. Maybe her economic plan is to breast-feed America.
But all jokes aside, this is a real strategy of hers. It’s pretty obvious. The material and sexual signals deflects the power, aggressiveness and manipulation that she wants to employ in the political arena. It makes her appear less threatening. Look what she’s doing in Alaska, she’s ignoring them and turning the gov’s office over to the McCain campaign. She’s ignoring subpoenas. Someone would not do this unless they have gotten away with stuff like this in the past.

(Maternal, I meant in the previous post.)

um, wow, bystander, I don’t know *any* women with a red suit, power or otherwise…
