King Henry IX

Paulson Newsweek

To put a Shakespearean twist on Paulson’s role is to anticipate that he set the terms, and we folded like subjects.  If, on the other hand, the point of the hyperbole is to shame us or warn us before it’s too late, I’d say Newsweek — almost completely blotted out by the crown — is doing us a favor.

Update 9/22 10pm PST – King Henry Look-Alike-Contest

Paulson Newsweek-1    Mussolini Time

I know this is a cheap shot.

Still, I’m trying to figure out why The BAG — otherwise, so temperate and cautious in its choice of images and allusions — has suddenly been infected by right-wing associations to fascism.  It couldn’t have anything to do with how much this Administration has taken the American people, and our military, and our standing in the world, and our core values, and our constitution, and our feeble Congress, and now our economy for such a ride, could it?

It couldn’t have anything to do with the cold, brazen admonition once again to do it fast and completely give it up, could it?

If, pictorially, there are dramatic differences here in ideology, maybe there are comparisons to be drawn when it comes to methodology.

(And then, there’s that nose, those eyes, the shape of the head.)  But seriously, maybe I’ve just gone (or gotten) mad.

A recently published article I found this morning on McCain’s market-based healthcare plan and a video of him expressing his stand on deregulation along with a bonus! He mentions the bridge to nowhere!!!!

Paulson cast the proposed market intervention as a lesser evil, arguing the consequences of inaction would be more dire than the large burden on taxpayers, while Democrats began to swap proposals with the Treasury.

This (type of propaganda) is called a “False Choice“, and we have seen this device before (e.g., within recent American history employed by Bush/Cheney to FRAME various crisis-driven : a priori conceived agendas, such as… CRISIS : “Invade IRAQ”, thus; or CRISIS : “offshore drilling”, thus.)
The “False Choice” presents the people with the dilemma, apparent that, “to do NOTHING is worse, perhaps catastrophic! than it is to do this RADICAL thing that I want you to do.”
It… “is a deliberate attempt to eliminate the middle ground on an issue,” and the very fact that these politicians, from both Republican & Democratic parties, are employing this “False Choice” propaganda should cause us to be very wary about: Why our leaders believe it is necessary to attempt to fool us in such an obvious manner.
The question is not: Should we trust our Leaders ? ”
The question is: Why do our Leaders not trust US ? ”
And the answer, imho, is that their conceit is: Because it is so easy for us to fool you! To manipulate you all with gimmick, identity candidates; To divide you with wedge issues; and appeal to your base ANGST = fear & anger, rather than REASON.”

I think we’re currently writing an appendix chapter to the “Shock Doctrine” book by Klein..
George has used this over and over and now, in the final days of his term, he’s unlocking the US Treasury itself and looting what’s left.
Is it true that the first draft of the emergency bailout gives Paulson total and unchallenged discretion over the distribution of $700 Billion dollars?? Zero oversight possible? OMG.. the takeover is nearly complete.

Supposedly we don’t do kings in America. Newsweek is not bestowing a compliment. If we bow down like peasants, that’s on us?

~ not a king how about czar ?
In the 80’s Senators voted to establish a ‘drug czar’ with overall responsibility for U.S. drug policy.
Lets do the same with finance.
Dubya’s old buddy Vladimir must be smiling with his Wall Street soul mates as their latest Capitalist caper is danced to a Socialist tune.

Monsieur Gonzo nails it again. We have heard this urgent call to ACT NOW! to AVERT DISASTER! and SAVE! AMERICA! and you’re either WITH US! or AGAINST US! etc. ad. naus., from the current administration, on so many issues. It didn’t work for them in privatizing Social Security, though, and only that gives me the slightest hope: perhaps the CALL! TO! ACTION! is editorialized with a bit more scrutiny when economic stakes are so unnervingly high and so close to (their) home? Our media overlords are themselves members of the ownership society, and perhaps they need not fear sounding elitist in letting a complex area remain complex, when their investments are at issue. Maybe it’s something about watching the sudden evaporation of institutions that had seemed like granite that makes an image like this seem timely.

    Dear American:
I need to ask you to support an urgent secret business relationship with a transfer of funds of great magnitude.
I am Ministry of the Treasury of the Republic of America. My country has had crisis that has caused the need for large transfer of funds of 800 billion dollars US. If you would assist me in this transfer, it would be most profitable to you.
I am working with Mr. Phil Gram, lobbyist for UBS, who will be my replacement as Ministry of the Treasury in January. As a Senator, you may know him as the leader of the American banking deregulation movement in the 1990s. This transactin is 100% safe.
This is a matter of great urgency. We need a blank check. We need the funds as quickly as possible. We cannot directly transfer these funds in the names of our close friends because we are constantly under surveillance. My family lawyer advised me that I should look for a reliable and trustworthy person who will act as a next of kin so the funds can be transferred.
Please reply with all of your bank account, IRA and college fund account numbers and those of your children and grandchildren to wallstreetbailout@treasury.gov so that we may transfer your commission for this transaction. After I receive that information, I will respond with detailed information about safeguards that will be used to protect the funds.
Yours Faithfully Minister of Treasury Paulson

And there’s the bulging vein that at first looked like a wavy downward spiral from a chart and on closer view looks like the word “ON”. In the second photo we brazenly see the same devastation that visited Galveston. The economy is “wiped out”, down into the gulf after just a couple of random hits- not even the Perfect Storm(trooper) could have worked this out so nicely for the next reign to inherit.
And you wonder why the rumor about the royalty is that they are always feeble or lame- the next king gets to battle the dark side of humanity. See the Golden Bough for reference to the death of nearly every king.
Fascist isn’t exactly on the money- but corporatist is. And this is what we have become. A fragile loyalty.

    Donna,
Beautiful. May I have permission to cut and paste this as an email to all my friends? This deserves to viral, ASAP. It captures the essence of the whole situation perfectly.

  • zatopa

Donna/Tina — I think if that were a well-named and well-timed diary on Big Orange, you’d have your viral.

Sure, Hank’s and Benito’s covers suggest a similarity that’s more than skin deep, but for a truer test, let’s see how Hank looks hung upside down on a meathook.

  • David

The photos remind me of Benito Mussolini.

And to think that this guy has the same last name as that greatest of ironic statesmen, Pat.
As for hanging people by the heels, I think the entire administration would look nice that way, along with several dozen former co-conspirators. McRumsfeld, Fredo, Brownie, Asscough, among them.
