So I’m wondering, is the Tyra Banks Bazaar photo spread supposing herself as a combo-Jackie/Michelle O. in the White House (already) more a plus for the Obama’s (i.e. more power and grace to Michelle) or a negative (evoking double-Harvard elitism; the uppity connotation of having won already; and the “celebrity” meme of doing it for the status and luxury)?

I think the fact that the models appear very young reinforces the McCain meme that Obama is too inexperienced to be president.

Pointless. Maybe one photo (the one at the desk) would have been amusing….but I don’t get the point of all the other shots. Michelle as a fashion icon? It’s all so vacuous. I guess that’s an intended or unintended consequence: vacuity and youth.

I am torn about all this celebrity meme stuff. I was at my parents for a few days and watched more cable news than I do otherwise (like, 100% more since I don’t have cable!). I am not seeing how the “obama is a celebrity” thing is so bad. It may hit the older crowd in some way or maybe the fear based closed minded crowd BUT I think it is a selling point with younger folks and all thinking people know politicians on this level become celebrity of sorts.
It seems like whatever negative backlash there maybe there is also a positive hit to it all. So, I suppose along those lines, the above picss just continue to play to that.

tyra is a media whore who will do anything to promote herself at the expense of others.if one has the stomach to watch a few minutes of her show you`ll notice it is always about tyra. no matter who she has on or what the topic is she always makes sure the discussion revolves around her.
this photo shoot is about tyra wanting to be the first lady.
it is not about barack or michelle.

i’m so glad michelle isn’t a gold digger like tyra.

Is there any text along with the photos that gives even the slightest reason why Ms. Banks did this? It’s very puzzling, indeed.

I’ve been looking at these photos for a couple of days and I can’t get past that they’re weird, creepy and disturbing and trivializing. I really don’t want to imagine the Prez in bed!
But I think Tyra’s just jealous of the new Madame Sarkozy.

I’d guess Tyra thinks she’s putting forth positive images, but it really comes off as simply vacuous. But worst, it seems an attempt to make Michelle into some sort of conventionally “acceptable” beauty, rather than the woman she really is. It plays into the notion of woman-as-object. Barack is really a beautiful looking human. Michelle does not have his supermodel good-looks (again, defined by convention) and so I ultimately see this as Tyra stepping in as a gorgeous surrogate. As pretty as these images are, they disgust me in their pandering to the notion of beautiful-is-better.

More in the Obama is a celebrity meme. Gee, which candidate’s wife owns six houses and a private jet, again? Oh yeah, McCain, huh? And another McCain ad today with those damned flashes aimed at Obama, even after some nutjob in Florida has threatened to assassinate him. The subtext of the McCain ads is very, very disturbing and needs to be explored in the media instead of ignored. Sick of this bullshit.

The usual American vulgarity. At least the French — Sarko & Co, perhaps, granted, more Euro than French — are vulgar with a bit of class.

Tyra might want to make a note–Michelle is a Princeton graduate.
    A real one, too.
She doesn’t just dress up as an Ivy league graduate for a fashion shoot.
What Ivy League school did you graduate from, Tyra baby?
    Thought so.

Abigail Adams > Jackie Kennedy > Tyra Banks. If First Ladies were voted into office based upon their media images, is there a runner-up?
WRT fashionistas, would American women voters prefer the crone, mother, or maiden?
