ObamcCain

Obama-Mccain-Time

Like the otherwise siamese twins need names and arrows in separate colors for us to tell them apart on the economy???

Beyond pure graphic license, I thoroughly don’t understand the point of fusing these two at the shoulder. You see, funny moves like these carry connotations.  Starting with the gesture I called out recently by the LAT, there seems to be some media instinct out there to blur the difference between these fundamentally different candidates.

Note to TIME:  As much as the visual metaphor shouts it out, these two are nowhere close to being cut from the same cloth.

If this is Time’s attempt to be “fair and balanced,” they are no better at it than Fox News. Only one of these candidates has an economic plan, the other says he’ll balance the budget with (among other things) savings resulting from ending a war that we’re paying for with deficit spending.

Obama’s head appears slightly larger and, therefore, closer. McCain’s smaller head appears more distant, as though receding (into the past?). The image provides no other indication of the large difference in height between the two men.
If they were indeed fused at the shoulders, it would be Obama’s tall thin frame carrying a dangling McCain’s short stocky body. The younger man carrying the burden of the older, perhaps in training for taking on another heavy load–the damage of eight years of Bush administration.

Plus … that picture of Obama looks nothing like him, IMO. They’ve messed with his eye or something. The lid looks droopy and older than normal. His nose looks bigger. McCain looks younger than we usually see him.
Obama looks like a scary black man, McCain looks like your kindly white grandpa. And I’ve NEVER thought of McCain as a kindly white grandpa.
    This cover is creepy.

Obama’s face has been photoshopped with the ugly wand. Something’s fishy here.

  • TJon

Why did they crop Obama’s face to the left of center? It makes his nose look bigger and ‘blacker’. They cropped McCain right at the center of his nose. Also, Obama’s picture looks to have more fish-eye in it–look how big his nose looks and how small his ears look (for Obama’s ears). The effect is not very flattering for Obama.

  • TJon

also I should note that one of Obama’s strong suits appearance-wise is the symmetry of his face, something the half-face negates. In contrast, McCain’s face is not at all symmetrical, something the half-face hides.

  • TJon

Ok, so maybe its not just fish-eye in the Obama picture–I think he is also turned slightly to his left (note how the ear sits flat against his head which it does not do in real-life). This makes his nose look more prominent and makes the whole picture look a little weird (I think your eye expects a straight on shot in this situation).

Reading the text down the middle.. after the blue Obama and red McCain, along with the tiny left and right arrows .. immediately “Blues” are mentioned as synonymous with ‘hard times’ and the right arrow tells us which way the super-rich-successful-businessman-computer-genius is headed.
Do you think they consider these things when they lay out the magazines? Either they are TRYING to subtly make these points, or they need to start reading the Bag to hone their informational sensitivity.

Every media outlet I’ve seen seems to be pushing the meme that this is a neck-and-neck race between two pols who are not that different from each other. I think it is to provide cover for yet another election about to be stolen.

We’ve talked about covering the halves of people’s faces before, to reveal the public and private face. I’d like to see the other half of each of those pictures, to see whether the picture was symmetric before vertically chopped.
Also, I did notice Obama’s epicanthal fold, which I can’t say I’ve paid attention to before. Another way to exoticize him?

I’m glad other people also think Obama was Photoshopped in this pic. That was my first thought: “This doesn’t look like him. Not his eyebrow, not his nose, not his lips. Something’s up.”

We subscribe to both TIME and Entertainment Weekly. The July 11, 2008 issue of EW has a dual image of Batman and The Joker. Guess which side The Joker is on? My husband pointed it out to me and I laughed until I had to go to the bathroom.

If I didn’t know that was supposed to be Obama I wouldn’t recognize the face. That says a lot. This face screams black, smirking, thug. I guess that’s all there is to say about it.
John McCain is “cleaned up” somehow–he looks pleasant, more youthful, and reasonably sane. Which is not how he looks in undoctored pictures–he looks about ready to blow a gasket all the time, like somebody who would scare children and think it was funny. He does not look mentally “together” if that makes any sense. Television footage of him reinforces this perception.
Will these carefully made flattering images soften that instinctive reaction on people’s part? Will people realize this is essentially a con, mutton dressed as lamb?
    We’ll see.
