He’s Not For Anything, He’s For Everything

Mccain-Buxton

“Now, nuclear power alone is not enough. Drilling alone is not enough. We need to do all this and more. That is why I am calling for an ‘all of the above’ approach.”

– John McCain

Ow, my head is spinning.

Forget “flip flopping” or “I was for it before I was against it.”  The McCain campaign is reaching for a whole new hypocrisy-transcendent state known as: “all of the above” (…in which any policy, or picture, can simultaneously mean one thing and its opposite).  Take the frame above, for example, from the “Broken” ad, released Tuesday touting McCain as a “maverick” and Washington reformer.  The key narrative states:

“Only McCain has taken on big tobacco, drug companies, fought corruption in both parties.  He’ll reform Wall Street, battle Big Oil, make America prosper again.”

You might note that the frame, however, immediately precedes the phrase: “battle big oil.”

So, McCain is going to take on folks like Buxton Oil in New Hampshire?  Although that’s where the footage was shot, McCain’s appearance there on July 22nd was a friendly one in which he met with the company owner, Donna Buxton, got on top of a home heating oil truck and advocated for continued federal aid for consumers to help pay for home heating oil.

Tire-Gauge

But then, the most contradictory pic of the week has to be this one, an indictment of “campaign-by-gimmick,” or what looks like the missile it was supposed to be, or an ironic visual coming from a candidate no one has ever been able to gauge.

McCain is all about supply (and pleasing the suppliers)
Obama’s tire gauge is all about demand. (I know he’s got more to say, but the visuals are focussing on the tire gauge right now..)
Hilton is the one who’s current media splash is more balanced and comprehensive !! Ha.

It seems like we keep seeing instances where the imagery of McCain ads explicitly contradicts the words– show Obama playing basketball with the troops while saying Obama wouldn’t meet the troops, show McCain meeting amicably with oil companies while saying McCain would fight oil companies.
It doesn’t seem to be hurting him any.

What does that say about US?
It drives me nuts. Is our population so backwards that they don’t care about someone being exposed as a liar, a cheat, a crook, a criminal, a murderer, or a war criminal? Not really.
These days it’s more like: “Is he the guy who will let me drive my Ford F-350 in peace, or is he the one who’s trying to kill my way of life?”

Simple math for simple minds (all EIA numbers):
Maximum estimated OIL production from ANWAR: 876,000 barrels/day
    Current GASOLINE usage: 9,286,000 barrels/day
3% savings from proper tire inflation: 278,600 barrels/day GASOLINE
Because it takes 2.15 barrels of OIL to produce 1.00 barrel of GASOLINE, the saving of 3% of gasoline means that proper tire inflation will save 599,000 barrels of OIL a day!!
If ANWAR is worth going for with it’s tremendous cost and with it’s time delay, isn’t getting the equivlent of 68% of ANWAR at no cost and immediately a smarter move?
Why does John MCain want the suffering to continue?

Good crike, how did they get those made up so quickly?

I want one because it expresses a sensible approach to energy conservation, but I’ll be damned if I donate a single penny to McCain to get one. I’ll bet they show up on ebay for a pretty price.

Lance – Saw one two days ago for $8.50

THX Gasho. I apppreciate the heads-up.

From a media POV, the tire gauge is great tchotchke work — simple, quick, and effective. What’s the phrase? Damning with faint praise. Is BHO’s campaign doing cheap schtick like this?
And speaking of saving fuel, how many thousands of gallons of gas did Obama’s Kuwait > Afghanistan > Iraq > Jordan > Israel > Germany > France > United Kingdom “World Tour”* use up trying to put him on the map? At least we can hope that all those tires were properly inflated for maximum mpg.
*More like a “Quarter-World Tour”, actually. All of Barack’s USA-friendly whistle stops together could fit into the one nation that will change America’s global presence more than any other. Why no visit to China? Did he not want to look like a President running into a BRIC wall?
