Still Playing In Peoria (Depending On Who’s Looking)

Bush Peoria Wh Site

Bush Peoria Nyt

Demonstrating that Dubya and the White House remain firmly inside their bubble, compare these two shots of Bush on Friday in Peoria.

The first shot is from the White House photo gallery.  The second is from a NYT article detailing how Bush, although largely frozen out of the campaign, continues to visit safe GOP districts, and otherwise is fundraising like a madman.

With the terror and security motif dying hard, it’s funny how the baby in the WH shot mirrors the agent.  Of course, the baby in the Times pic easily symbolizes the feelings toward Bush of approximately 8.5 out of 10 of the rest of us.

In this case, however, it’s the White House which offers the greater context — at least, as to the locale.  Whereas the NYT identifies the setting as simply the Peoria airport, the White House indicates the exact spot is the Peoria Airport Air National Guard Ramp and the friendlies are military families.

Seems those military audiences, long a staple of the  Bush photo op — in the WH version, almost exclusively stocked with young girls and babies — now serve as a last refuge.

The cliché is the politician kissing babies to get elected. This guy is in the last half-year of his last term doing important work for the nation — raising money for Republicans. The kid in the top pic is one cool guy. The one below has probably seen Stephen King’s The Dead Zone, knows what a certain class of politician really thinks about babies.

The first picture has to be old. The uniforms on the female soldiers was phased out years ago..
Anyways, it disgusts me how happy bush is in his last days. Joking all the time and what not. How can he knowing he started two wars. Knowing all the death and destruction it has caused? He obviously cares not.

  • Mike

oops, I could be wrong on the uniforms, Army and Marines did phase them out years ago but Air Force still uses them. Cant see any insignia for their branch, soo..

Seems like a fairly homogeneous skin color in these shots.
Doesn’t Peoria have ethnic diversity, even in the Guard?
No “scary black people” showing their faces here…

Since the Bag is my first news stop these days, the juxtaposition of blog entries and the contrasts they show can also be critiqued as if the newspapers themselves were showing two stories together on the front page. Consider the Pictures of Bush laughing with babies and the picture of Obama meeting with the military leadership in the Middle East. Bush is able to laugh it up with so much blood on his hands because he’s sold his soul completely. Obama looks ready to do the hard work of leading our country back toward our better selves – he actually addresses the reasons behind the extremist violence and talks of supporting dignity and well being for those on the planet who are desperate enough to become extreme. He’s pursuing actual solutions. Bush’s talk of “spreading democracy” was fabricated by the Office of Special Plans as a marketing strategy for war. The contrast is clear.
I will put forth right now that if Obama is NOT elected, then the power of the corporate/industrial/military complex will have finally eclipsed the Will of the People in our country. If this is the case, then the Constitution is no longer the Law of the Land – not even symbolically. It will be time to take to the streets. Not with a hand painted sign and a smile.. but for real; for it will be time to “to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for [our] future security” per the INSTRUCTIONS in the Declaration of Independence!!

I disagree with the assessment that he’s still in a bubble. I think he may never have been in a bubble. He just doesn’t give a damn what the 75% think of him and what he has done. Why should he? He has accomplished so much of what was important to him, his partisans, and cronies.

  • Mike

    He obviously doesnt care.
But if not a bubble then what would you call it when you only surround yourself with people who tell you what you want to hear? All while eliminating anybody with dissent or objections?

I see that waste of protoplasm anywhere and I think, “Please don’t create a POLICE STATE on my account.”

Everytime I see him touching a child it gives me the shivers.

Looks like Obama in ‘08 isn’t making much headway with the infantile vote, either.
Perhaps the nursery is a little more unprogressive than the BagMan thinks: don’t give me no hands, and keep your lines to yourself.

I’d say the barn looks pretty dark and empty right now.
After the Revolution (at the polls or at the barricades), when Obama is installed as GuardsMan of the People, which parts of the Patriot Act will he revoke? What TSA rules will he cancel? Will he stop the GWOT in Afghanistan and Iraq? Will Guantanamo’s legal Never-Never Land for ‘illegal enemy combatants’ disappear? Will ‘torture’ reassume its traditional loathsome definition?
And if he should attack Iran — because America has no option left but to eliminate a ‘clear and present danger’ to worldwide freedom and democracy (using all the fine products of the corporate/industrial/military complex) — what then?
