Out Of Touch?

Hillary Hi

Bho Alone

In the day-after-Pennsylvania coverage, does the visual comparison between HRC and BHO leave Obama looking, well, tainted?

These shots, in this order, opened the Chicago Trib on-line Election ‘08 photo gallery.  (For  comparison, check out the Clinton versus Obama juxtaposition the NYT offered in back-to-back articles in its on-line Politics section.)

Of course, it’s possible Obama was largely keeping to his lonesome yesterday (although it’s hard to extrapolate from two pics taken so close together).  Either way, however, what comes through is a solitary, isolated and disaffected Obama.  (As in, “leave me alone to eat my waffle.”)

Conversely, of course, the Hillary here (and in the NYT link) is extraordinarily unguarded, inviting, personal, engaging and upbeat.  Part of the very real concern over “the kitchen sink” has to do with the depth, degree and, particularly, the durability of particular forms of characterization.  In this case, the image of Obama maps only too well with accusations of disconnection, ineffability and elitism (especially in the NYT photo linked above, of Obama reading the NYT).

This one is not your best effort Bag. First off, what comes to mind to me when I view the picture is the image of the proverbial, weary traveler. And how could it be otherwise? The guy has people around him all day. For god’s sake, I would be thinking, can I get a minute to read something? Anything…. A briefing paper…the sports section, kid’s report card, trips I’m gonna take once this near mindless marathon of vapid questions, vapid answers, and reporters will morning breath from last night’s pesto special reeking in my face, is mercifully over? “Let me have five minutes to myself.’
And what if the “young woman” in the picture WAS sitting with him? Just the two of them in the row? Then the question (although, i trust not from you Bag) would be “and WHO is that young lady that gets to sit alone with Obama”. Let’s face it…..this is a near barbaric and senseless way to go about selecting who should lead the nation.

Superficially these images fit the conventional story line of the PA primary aftermath — there was a winner (happy!) and a loser (sad?). ‘Bout as good as it gets from the media gatekeepers, not that they’re elitist or anything, just that they have to break it down into tiny pieces for us. I’m sure they’d do a better job of telling the story if they had any assurance that we’d be able to keep up.
But looking closer, maybe there is some real story in these images. Sen Clinton’s bright face looks more than a little forced, the months of playing to a 24/7 public exacting their toll. Her problem is the same as the media’s, the public has certain expectations that one is loathe to disappoint. The last thing HRC needs is for people to see that she understands that the math of delegate counts is overwhelmingly against her.
On the other hand Sen Obama’s loneliness looks therapeutic or productive. He’s not brooding, he’s studying. He looks engaged. We can’t tell whether those around him are giving him space because they were told or because they could figure it out. It doesn’t really matter. It looks like BHO understands delegate math.

    Couldn’t disagree more.
Hillary looks like the co-worker who couldn’t sleep the night before and discovered the newest diet fade on a late night infomercial and can’t wait to tell her co-workers about it in the morning.
Obama looks like what people expect in a president, answering the three in the morning call. Thoughtfulness. Weary, sure. But not unlike any great athlete on the sidelines after loosing a game in what otherwise has been a winning season.

I agree with the commenters above. This act of reading into one click of a camera’s shutter all this “meaning” is total crap. As a longtime photographer, I know I can make or break anyone just by watching and waiting and taking the most incriminating image or the most uplifting one. Then, the editor picks his favorite image and it’s almost always the worst one that the shooter would never have picked. Senator Obama is writing one of his great speeches. Hillary is trying to find the john.

    Gray,
You wrote: I agree with the commenters above. This act of reading into one click of a camera’s shutter all this “meaning” is total crap”.
Now, hold on a minute here. Since I could be defined as one of the “commentators” above I don’t think, in general, reading “all this meaning” into a photo is “total crap”. Quite the contrary. I just think Bag got it wrong, in the particular case. And I must remind myself that there is no objective ‘right’ answer in this case. i.e. Bag’s as good, or as bad, as mine.

as a person with more experience as a consumer than as a producer of photographs, the first thing that springs to mind looking at this photo of Obama is that it reminds me of the photo essays in Time magazine during the 60’s and 70’s, where a recurring theme was that of the lonely but noble world leader bearing the burdens of a troubled time. i saw photos exactly like this one of kennedy, johnson, nixon, ford, carter…it’s a shot press photographers seem to love. the one of HRC looks (forgive me if you’ve been employed by them) like something out of People or Us.

Hillary here (and in the NYT link) is extraordinarily unguarded, inviting, personal, engaging and upbeat…
Or, maybe she looks extraordinarily crazy, crazy, crazy, crazy, and crazy. If I saw that face on the street, I’d lock my car doors.

I agree that BAG missed the mark this time. (Not a bad track record overall though.)
I think Hillary has that peppy cheerleader look…very forced…sort of “you’ll surely like me if I smile a lot” …and also very tired at the same time. She is running on fumes in this one and trying to smile her way to victory.
Obama looks calm, collected, thoughtful and above the fray. All qualities I like in my president.

  • http://reciprocity-failure.blogspot.com Stan B.

Gotta go with the flow here. Obama looks contemplative, thoughtful- presidential. Hillary looks as if in the throes of wanton, crazed giddiness, but then she always looks that way to me…

  • The BAG

BAG could be onto visual trend that is still in formative stage.
BAG could be projecting the impact of the kitchen sink onto what was likely yesterday’s best set of shots (enhanced by their on-board symmetry).
BAG could be working too hard.
BAG could be too defensive on part of Obama.
BAG could be eliciting some pro-Obama push back here in lending substance to Hillary’s poison (and the visual media’s susceptibility to it).
(BAG has removed reference to “idle young woman sitting alone in the left aisle” as heightening BHO isolation, btw.)

I was thinking about these two photos while I was driving today. If I were around hundreds or thousands of people every day, I would require time alone to regroup and focus my energies. Maybe one of the reasons the Obama campaign has run so well is that he uses his time and energy wisely. Clinton reminds me of my manic brother-in-law. She seems so hyperactive when she starts that pointing routine that she does so often when she gets on a podium.

HRC has a forced smile, I agree, but she also looks condescending– although I suppose I could be imposing this based on my attitudes towards her. But even if more than one interpretation of either pic is possible, I’m inclined to agree with you about how the juxtaposition is intended.

  • Johanna

Thank you for noticing that asinine pointing routine, where she gets a look of delighted surprise on her face and points to someone she is “surprised” to see in the audience. The pointee must be equally surprised to be singled out. Just one small part of a total package of falsity.

    Huh.
When I saw Hillary, I thought of the Energizer Bunny. And then I thought, I sure hope I have that kind of energy when I get to her age.
Obama just looks as tired as I feel.
