Twerp

“I am a little surprised that all the complaining about the refs has actually worked as well as it has for them,” [Obama] said, using a sports allusion to the news media as referees. “This whole spin of how the press has just been so tough on them and not tough on us — I didn’t expect that you guys would bite on that.”  — March 4, 2008 (The Caucus)

What’s this about referees?

Politics is a slimy, nasty, disgusting, bare knuckled and visual business.  If he’s as savvy as the last pic is not, Obama will realize that he can’t let tainted, tinted, timid, trade two-stepping twerp imagery swirl around the media sphere without offering effective counter-imagery, as well as strong, smart and vivid arguments which catalyze the press to discount framing like this.

A reader directed my
attention today to what could only be called an intense anti-Hillary
screed at dKos.  The thrust of the post was two-fold.  It charged that
Clinton’s latest ad, titled "
True,"
misrepresented the status and characterization of Obama’s foreign
relations subcommittee on Afghanistan.  More toxic, though, was the
charge that the ad depicts Obama as darker than he is.

The level of partisan anger in the post
is so high, I was inclined to dismiss the whole thing altogether.  I
also think there are many production issues at play, both video and
internet-wise, which I’m not an expert on, but have to think could
account for a good bit of the contrast.  There are also differences in
scale, as well as various post-production elements involved, including
the circular filter applied over the Afganistan video to give it a more
conspiratorial feel.

In general, though, I was curious enough about the charge to do my own screen grabs from both YouTube videos, the first one from the Ohio debate and the second from the spot in the "True" ad that was taken from the debate footage — the latter, by the way, not necessarily derived from the same source as the former.  Strictly comparing the YouTube material, the difference in shade is pretty extreme.

I was very disheartened by the Red Phone ad, it’s a fear mongering piece right out of the Karl Rove playbook. I had hoped that the Clintons wouldn’t stoop to pushing such emotional buttons- haven’t we had enough scare tactics over the past seven years from the Republicans? What I see in this is an overwhelming thirst for power. What is even more depressing is that even after all we’ve been through with various boogey men popping out of our TVs(Terrorists, WMD, Homosexuals, Illegal Aliens etc), based on yesterday’s results, the voters fall for it every time.

The Clinton campaign is fighting all right, for it’s own life! These “grabs” join “Obama does not put his hand over his heart during the Pledge of Allegiance” in the pantheon of efforts to discredit Obama.
I’m sorry that the writer’s strike kept SNL from putting on Fred Armisen as Obama, if they had covered earlier debates. Fred’s facial expression might have made Barack understand that a smile would go a lot further than a scowl!
While we consider the dark side of candidates, let’s think about the court case in California, in which Mr Peter F Paul is taking former President Clinton to court, charging various misdeeds, including fraud, in Paul v Clinton. It hinges on a fundraiser in 2000 on behalf of Hillary’s senate campaign, and seeks damages for the treatment Paul received at the hands of the Clintons. Media do not cover the story, I assume there is pressure not to do so. Only a blog or two, correct me if I’m missing some, and WorldNetDaily follow the story. Stay tuned; next court date is April 25, 2008!

    YouTube => Red Phone Ad . . . originally Mondale, circa 1984
    dKos tally of delegate results, yesterday = TheClintons : 185 -v- Obama! : 184
imho, one of the most interesting Talking Points in The Conversation is the spin = canard of The BIG STATE theory (as if, any Republican had any chance whatsoever of taking, say: CA, or NY from either Democratic candidate). Indeed, when we net out: “all the States that voted 2004 Kerry“, because they are highly unlikely to vote McCain 2008, TheClintons‘ BIG STATE “base” evaporates, as it is revealed to be the “base” of the Democratic Party itself, status quo.
imho, Mr. Obama does not have to “go negative” = CHANGE himself . . . because Obama! = the movement is likely to do so, and CHANGE itself into a more aggressive character.
Whether or not the kids have a killer instinct, like we did in ‘68, remains to be seen :)

Tan, brown, black….Obama is the only one with any honor in this race, no matter the shade of his skin, and those racist-bigots who work for Clinton should be ashamed, as she herself should be, for using this kind of nasty manipulation. Whatever his colour, Obama is so superior to Clinton, that anyone with sense should see through this.

I did a search for any coverage of the SNL skits last fall, the inevitability and Halloween “witch” skits, for example. I didn’t pull anything up (my search skills could be better)–just wondering what your take is on those?
I don’t understand why the SNL cast member playing Obama was featured in this list of photos which visually seem to be attacks against Obama. I thought he looked quite a bit like Obama–not bad for a cast member. In fact, I thought they had brought on a new cast member, since I didn’t recognize the actor from his roles such as Ahmadinejad Does NYC. And SNL, while gigging the fluffing MCMers (members of the Mainstream Corporate Media), seemed to treat the Obama character with careful respect. Perhaps too careful? What am I missing here?

When we saw the red phone ad, my beau paused it and asked, “Did you see that?!”. What we both noticed, on first viewing, was that one of the children is wearing pajamas with the letters “NIG” (nighty-night?) appearing in the top left corner of the screen. Can this be an accident?

Extra special bonus points, the American flag in image 5 appears to be torn asunder!

Until recently, I have said I could happily vote for either Obama or Clinton in November. That has now changed. The 3 AM ad – a collective fear-instiller at a time when we need to be recovering from 8 years of fear-mongering; also, Hillary’s two slippery qualifiers on the 60 Minutes question about Obama=Muslim rumors. There is only one answer to that: It’s not true and it’s offensive to Muslims for what it means to suggest about them. But Clinton went another way. What’s a little more cultural-religious poison as long as I get to win? Now the “shame on you, Barack Obama” line begins to seem like projection. And today’s Clinton spin “Obama is like Ken Starr” is more than a little ironic given that the Clinton tactics smack of Rove and Atwater. And with all of this, anyone notice how perfectly radiant and happy Hillary looks in most of the latest pics? (I LOVE this sh*t!) It’s beginning to creep me out.

    jawbone,
The reason the SNL image is included here and the motivation for the title of the post are one in the same.  As the foil for the argument that Obama has been innocently, even smugly sitting back while being pampered by the press, actor Fred Armisen sits there like a twerp.
Here’s my post on Obama’s November ‘07 Halloween SNL skit (“Obama More Or Less”) and you can still see the video here at Crooks and Liars.  I’m glad you bring it up because, I have to say, the sketch is a lot more interesting now after everything that’s gone down in the past two weeks.

The “shame on you” rant WAS projection! That’s the best way to describe it. It was an outrageous way to talk to another candidate. I’m surprised it didn’t hurt her. The SNL skits are so favorable to her. While they have many of Obama’s mannerisms down, they in no way parody her. What about her turning and furiously attempting to stare him down, an act of open hostility that she has engaged in over and over and over during the debates? You never see it in their characterization of her as a slightly overeager policy wonk beaten up on by mean men. Nothing of her aggression or fury makes the slightest appearance. The show’s creator is owned, lock, stock, and barrel by the Clintons. What’s new? They have always owned that show.
