From a symbolic standpoint, it seems pretty lame that security concerns forced the British to hand off Basra to the Iraqis out at the airport on Sunday.  And, security for the hoopla was all courtesy of the Brits.

Looking for ceremonial images, the newswire was full of “perimeter” pics like these.

    The Brits did the old “declare victory and run for your lives”!
    Kind of a new version of a helicopter on the roof of the embassy in Saigon.
    They have been under constant attack in the Basra area for the past few years–an article earlier this year said their outposts had received the most attacks since a unit in WW2.
    There were only two options, massive escalation or withdraw.
