Christ, What An Ad!

Huckabee-Christmas

So, is it or isn’t it?

(That’s one glowing bookcase.  …And then, wasn’t Jesus just nominated for running mate?

The NYT calls it “gauzy.”  Try “furtive” on the imagery, and plain aggressive on the “name dropping.”)

Update 11/20 : Huck’s rebuttal.  Also blinking his eyes in Morris Code?

What’s most revolting is the Huck campaign’s disingenuous profession of “surprise” about the way the ad is being perceived. “Golly gee,” they say. “It’s just a bookcase.”
In other words, they are professing that one of two things is true: (a) Huckabee is profoundly unaware and insensitive, or (b) Huckabee is a contemptible liar.

I thought it was a very sophisticated commercial. The background is constantly moving behind Huckabee showing the things they wnat you to see. Everything on that set was planned and it was probably on a turntable. The bookcase is almost certainly designed to be perceived as a cross.

If people are unable to see past Huckabee’s blatant “surprise” tactic of using religion as a foundation for his lackluster campaign, then it is a shame on the face of America that they are so easily swayed by pretty words and pretty pictures. Any professional photographer/filmmaker will tell you that such imagery was NOT accidental.

It’s nice to know that subliminal advertising is alive and well.

I saw the cross as struts for a kit. Its the tree that’s puzzling because:
“Learn not the way of the heathen…for the customs of the people are vain: for one cutteth a tree out of the forest…they deck it with silver and gold” –
    Jeremiah 10:2-4
I’m not up on Christianity but wondered if this tree was environmentally friendly, that is recyclable, might it be less sinful and troubling to Jeremiah or to strict adherents of ‘the good book’ like the Reverent Huckabee?

Somehow I’d like to see some books in a bookcase.
Do those three shining balls stand for the trinity?

Those of us who have ’studied’ the ice in an “Old Grandad” liquor ad in “Playboy” know that this is no accident. Anyone in the film business knows this is very carefully planned. Anyone in the business of making political campaign ads knows this is a clever manipulation. Shuckabee’s “surprise” is as disingenuous as is his desire that we all believe that he is no longer a baptist minister. Why else would he make a “christmas” religious political ad?
the problem is that it was done so heavy-handedly. Subliminal advertising works only if it remains subliminal. Since this is not that subtle, it becomes more of an in-your-face xian nose-thumbing to the public.
