TIME to GOP: Bring On The Replacements?

1101070625 400

Maybe D.C. gridlock is the manifest issue here, but this cover has Presidential politics written all over it.

Is TIME — perhaps panicking over a one-sided, low-drama (read: “low eyeball”) election — lobbying for a GOP line-up overhaul?  And, could they even be field-testing some supposedly “playing-field leveling” conventional wisdom?  In other words, is there a potential meme here marking the Dems for packing the White House field with Senators.  (And then, who would be more fitting for an anti-D.C. attack, by the way, than the former First Lady?)

    *GAG*
Very sly of you Repubes, I must say…
So, as I see it, the GOP strategy was to keep an “ace-in-the-hole”, a Republican they can stage as very distant from them (Gov. Schwarzenegger), and in the event of a Republican political disaster (Iraq war, anyone?) they could miraculously rise from the ashes as a totally new flavor of GOP.
But I gotta say no no NO! The two buttplugs on the cover of Time this week own the war in Iraq, just as much as BushCo’s elite. How could ANYONE still want to wear such a loathsome symbol as (R)??? The Republican Party should go find a quiet place to die and stop impeding the rest of us from fixing the mess YOU created!

Well JR, I’m not quite so skeptical and hardbaked as you. I find Arnold and Michael’s voices both welcome relief from the DC talking points memo’s. If you deny that they are true movers and shakers, you don’t know what that term means. GETTING CREATIVE THINGS DONE. If however Bloomberg goes the 3rd Patry route, that would be a problem.
BTW – talking about “plugs”, isn’t it almost time for Nader to launch his candidacy?

  • Neal

Arnold looks like Danny DeVito with pants up above his navel. Maybe thats the point. These guys are positioned to be fun and funny –not like the remainder doom sayers.

  • Karen

    Arnold looks old!!!
Yikes….god I hope this doesn’t happen. Let them nominate that sack-faced Thompson, ARnold probably wouldn’t run against him as an independent. They probably share a personal trainer or something.

  • Asta

Arnold can’t run for president. He is not a natural born citizen of the US.

  • Cyranetta

This cover pictures seems almost specifically designed to negate the possibility of such candidacies — the subjects are in a cartoonish pose with attenuated coloring, reducing their connection to reality.

They are looking down at you and smiling, maybe laughing at you. This is a camera position that connotes power, according to the books on film-making, and puts you, the reader and voter, in the proper place, looking up adoringly at your leaders whom Time will choose for you. It also makes the less than average height Bloomberg look as tall as Ah-nold (who is not much more than average height himself). Ah-nold does look old.

Is that a skull n’ crossbones belt buckle on the governor?

  • Mad_nVT

Time is showing that we the Working Folks are in the urinal, and we be about to be pissed on. Again. By the billionaires and the celebrities.
Remember the old Republican line, “A rising tide lifts all boats”.
I’m thinking that a rising tide in a urinal is not good news if you are being in that urinal.

Oh great, the billionaire and the legal alien are “men of da peep-hole.” Effing spare me.

The thing that first jumped out at me is the tie Ahnold’s wearing. Not the usual red or blue but a truly hideous green. Wonder who they were aiming at with that?

  • ummabdulla

Yeah, the green tie and that hand of his – it’s almost like a third head up there.

  • Chill

Is that a skull n’ crossbones belt buckle on the governor?
Surprisingly enough it appears to be a Nazi Deaths Head insignia which was worn by the SS. Google and then compare the images. Very Strange.

  • readytoblowagasket

The real question is: Who needs TIME?

  • http://solarray.blogspot.com gmoke

“Even if the trickle down theory of economics works you’re still getting pissed on.”
    Ah-nold looks like Joe Piscopo.

  • readytoblowagasket

Just today Michael Bloomberg changed his party affiliation from Republican to unaffiliated.
Wow, maybe we do need TIME after all.
(Just kidding. I’m not wowed that a New York City-based magazine got the inside scoop on the New York City-based mayor. I am impressed that TIME somehow made Bloomberg look like Dan Rather, however.)

  • Kitt

Jezzus Christ on an appaloosa! Who dressed AhNold!? That is a horrendous color AND that Belt Buckle!

Michael Bloomberg & Diana Taylor : ohYeah! in a New York minute!
On The Other Hand : Herr Gröpenführer => Time Is On My Side

  • KingElvis

I agree about the groin-centric angle – and Bloomberg has one leg cocked up. Then Arnold is sort of hugging Bloomie like he’s his man-bitch. It doesn’t make them seem dominant, it just creeps me out – I really feel like my space is being invaded with the staging of this.
Billionaires and Celebrities – they’re the only ones with the “courage” as TIME says, to be POTUS.

  • Pink Freud

Another thing that’s really bizarre about this photo…. Arnold is proudly displaying his Nazi “skull and bones paraphanelia”, and Bloomberg is Jewish.
