The Task At Hand

Mehlman-Hand

Because November’s trend line is not quite clear, the political visuals are also hard to read.

Adam Nagourney’s article in Sunday’s NYT Mag, an extended profile of Republican National Committee chairman Ken Mehlman, reveals a haggard and frustrated man.  Citing his huge effort to bring blacks and latinos into the party, Mehlman is described as profoundly disillusioned over the way Bush and Katrina spoiled it.  The write-up also hints at friction between Mehlman and Rove over authority, as well as bragging rights for the Bush string of victories.

On the other hand, the article also emphasizes Mehlman’s intense energy, as well as his still far superior Republican get-out-the-vote apparatus.  A parallel Week In Review piece, also by Nagourney, emphasizes how the Repub campaign committee has raised more money and, at the steering level, remains much more unified then the Dems.

On first pass, an image like this is a total send up.  With the pasted on smile, the background reminiscent of cheap wood panelling, and the gargantuan hand, it plays like a paean to the used-car salesman.  Still, it’s a portrait, and could likely have been Mehlman’s idea.  In that’s case, this is nothing more than an encapsulation of hard knuckled Republican tenacity.

It will be interesting to revisit this shot in November.  Mehlman could end up the snake-oil pitchman, having crashed to earth after an usual stretch of luck.  On the other hand, he might well have distinguish himself as the man who slapped enough backs, greased enough skids, and “converted enough of the demographic” to have pulled things out.

Mehlman never really struck as a major league corrupt asshole like most of the GOP leadership does. Perhaps that’s just ignorance or good marketing. But still.

You absolutely have got to see what’s running on NYTimes.com right now… a pic of Bill Frist with what amounts to a halo!!!

Mehlman is a closeted, self-hating gay, hypocrital piece of garbage. Any questions?

The Handshake : “…possible genesis is a gesture showing that the hand holds no weapon; suggesting usage dating to the Graeco-Roman era. It was brought into practice in its present form in Western society by 17th century English Quakers as a more egalitarian and simpler alternative to the complex greeting etiquette of the higher social classes. Thomas Jefferson is often accredited with popularizing the technique during his tenure in the White House, displacing the bow as a more democratic greeting
…today, The Handshake ritual is commonly done upon meeting, departing, offering congratulations, or completing an agreement.”
Here he congratulates himself (he may as well be looking into a mirror, albeit one that reflects distortions truthfully). His agreement apparent is what, a Faustian Bargain with the MEDIA = ME? : “the bargain is always a dangerous one, for the price of the Fiend’s service is the wagerer’s soul.”
    It’s a hand job, n’est-ce pas?
He’s selling:the handy-man can” con. Selling is seduction, not a greeting. He’s not showing he bears no arms ~ he’s trying to dis-arm me. I’m charmed.
I don’t know why you say “GoodBye,” I say “Hello!”
there’s this fascinating BBC/PBS series How Art Made The World and episode 1 is about how those most ancient little carvings representing the human figure were, and still are made as a “fertile” implicit female form with ‘exaggerated hips and breasts’ and no facial features apparent: character, thus is that which is most felt. He suggests that the body-image in art=reflection, is “more human [to us] than human” precisely because our realism = what we realize, is not reality. He proposes that, even from pre-historic times we are predisposed ~ our brains are hard-wired (not learned) ~ to recognize and assign a universal SET of body-image distortions that we use to define the character of self and others.
    i re-cognize “The Handy Man.”
but i do not know him: whoever he is, or else he was, he’s not there. if “The Handy Man” is selling, and not greeting, then in this act he has lost himself, too… The only way he’ll know where he’s at, is by my reaction to his hand = he. The salesman says, “do something, and define my presence, thus.”
The Handy Man figure as politician literally re-presents me.

Or a really really big sombrero.
The Mehlman portrait strikes me as pretty fair (as in “… and balanced”). Well coiffed and tailored, he exudes polish & sheen, a pro’s pro. In spite of all the cues, the extended (foreshortened) mitt, direct eye contact, and wide smile, I still suspect he’s not really glad to see me.

I don’t trust this glad-handing, grinning automaton– who just happens to be the Chairman of the scoundrels that are breaking this nation.
Regarding the Frist-with-Halo link mentioned above by Jon: Frist is looking way too much like he has Schiavo Syndrome. Compare to photos that BagMan put up on November 2, 2005, the link is in the column somewhere on the left side of this page.
This must have been a bad year for Frist.
Also on Nov. 2, 2005, BagMan posted Harry Reid wearing that same halo. I don’t know how Harry is looking these days, but judging by how well the Democrats have done recently, I’d say that he’s had a bad year too.
