Undertaking A New Strategy?

Undertaker

(even bigger)

“Jest” a little free association from The BAG:

1.  If White House shake-up was supposed to ease conformity, think again.

2.  Administration looking a little down these days?

3.  Maybe that’s what happens after years of getting your back up.

4.  Hubbard’s folder lends interesting twist….  The economic picture: black and white and red all over.

5.  “Day Without Immigrant” leads to extra tall grass?

6.  Black suits.  Gallows posture.  With Karl on politics 100% again, “undertaker look” fits scary new ‘06 campaign theme.

BAGreaders, feel free to pile on!

BAG, I don’t think I can top yours! Hilarious.
    Possible headlines:
    1. Hubbard out of step with Administration
    2. Bush determined to head further to the right
    3. Three Beagle Boys escape disguised as politicans!

It looks like George is getting a reading lesson, and the lesson is hard, but worse yet they might get shit on their shoes, so they have to be careful where they step. How clever of Rove to have two people in front of him; that is unless Fitzpatrick is following them.
On a more serious note, the light on the grass in the background provides interesting contrast. These fellows are not headed toward the light, but it is leaking through the trees permeating the scene. Perhaps they are feeling trapped by the sunshine; it is the best disinfectant.

Aaaggh! They’re doing the Beatles pose (only sad, republican)! You can’t do that unpurposefully, can you? It looks like they’re trying to be iconic on purpose? Probably not? But maybe, I mean these guys are on self-PRwatch 24-7, right?

  • CommiePinkoScum

It reminds me of an album cover, or possibly what an album cover would look like in an alternate, much sadder universe. Back when 33 1/3 RPMs were the standard, there would be a back photo/illustration which matched the front cover. I see this photo as the backpiece of an album, the sad walking-away photo to accompany what must have been the glossy happy smiley frontspiece.
I am astounded every time I see Rove and Bush at how grey they have gotten, in both hair and pallor.

  • CommiePinkoScum

Two of us posted at the exact same time, both thinking the same thing about the photo. It’s a liberal conspiracy! Alert the media!

  • ummabdulla

They look like they’re hurrying away before they have to answer any questions. And they look like they’ve got the weight of the world on their shoulders. Things are not “looking up”.
I’m worried about what desperate move they might make, now that they’re so obviously in trouble.

  • Asta

The poses remind me of the classic evolution illustration, in reverse.

    Black suits.
    Gallows posture.
    . . . "undertaker look"
    fits scary new
    ‘06 campaign theme.

    That NYT article says this

"Senate Republicans sent out a fund-raising letter this week seeking to use that possibility to fire up the base, warning that a Democratic majority would put fighting terrorism "on the back burner" and that "our worst fears" could be realized."

I had expected to see something about the "paralyzing flood of investigations" that the "angry left of the Democrat party" champing to unleash.  But no the "worst fears" he wants to vaguely mention are associated with a claim that Democrats don’t care enough about "fighting terrorism".  That is scary. What can you say to prove that if elected you will do better than Bush in preventing something that has not happened but clearly would if the right people really wanted it to.

It is sort of a "step on a crack break Jesus’ back" sort of thing "vote in Democrats and bin Laden will get you".  These guys don’t play around.  I am sure that they have been watching some Americans who like to talk about jihad and are ready to discover them, with the aid of the CIA and NSA, and save us all in October.

If that is not enough who knows.  Would a gang like that permit another Reichstag Fire just to give Bush another bullhorn moment?  I think so and so am willing to cut Democrats some slack if they don’t always sound like doves and don’t always follow Rove into the fights he selects.

Another way to read that picture is that this is a squad walking through a mine field, stepping in the leader’s footsteps because there is only one clear path.   I think that is a good description of their plans.  The want the Democrats to march into a prepared battle field full of landmines.  We have to let our leaders pick a path and all follow it with care.

ummabdulla writes, “. . . they look like they’ve got the weight of the world on their shoulders.” Maybe the reverse is true, the world is the one that has the weight of these venal men on their shoulders. Hubbard’s red folder reminds me of the Administration’s penchant (especially Dick Cheney and Condi Rice) for posh leather portfolios filled with the records of god-knows-what dirty deeds inside. Hubbard’s red folder, which looks like it came from Staples, hints at some kind of internal disarray and sense of alarm. And wow, has Rove lost weight! Just a few months ago, he was bloated and pudgy. Is it the Patrick Fitzgerald diet, or medication?
These gaunt men remind of the Blue Meanies from “Yellow Submarine.” Actually, they’re more like the tall, silent men in the film who would walk around dropping poisoned apples on the happy inhabitants of Pepperland.
These creepy men are saving their big guns—the personal smears and the disenfranchisement of likely Democratic voters until October at the earliest. The undertaker metaphor is accurate in the sense that right now they’ve gone underground.

My reaction too, that can’t be Karl Rove. Where’s the rest of him? A close look shows a second chin-like formation or at least a vestige.
I’d say they’ve discovered the Criminal Investigation Weight Loss Plan. Duke Cunningham lost 70-80 pounds between the first raids last summer and sentencing earlier this year.

Karl’s suit must be fairly new. And is that the start of a mullet creeping down towards his collar?

    I agree with that, too.
Rove looks like he has lost lot of weight – and in a very short time!

GWB: Papa always told me, “when you lose something, retrace your steps.”
Hubbard: Yes, but I’m not sure that credibility is something you can just misplace, Mr. President. In order to revitalize you approval ratings, you’ll have to actually do something that the American people approve of.

They’re leaning so far forward, I thought for a second that in the next frames of the sequence, maybe they all start teetering forward, stumble, crash and fall on their faces. It would be very slapstick, very Moe, Larry and Curly. Wishful thinking.
It would probably only be Bush who falls, though, since he’s shown a lack of balance from all those bicycle crashes.

This is just priceless. All my thoughts have been written by the group already so I wasn’t going to post. But then I noticed that they are really walking within each other’s space. Unless there’s some sort of telephoto distortion, it looks like Hubbard’s front foot is in the same lateral as Bush’s rear foot. Almost so for Rove’s foot. It almost looks like Bush is stomping off in a fit of pique and the others are trying to keep up with him. Why do I get the impression that Bush is upset, preoccupied? I don’t know…….could it be the scandals and resignations are beginning to take his attention off the bass fishing in his lake?

Another red folder reference … during Tony Snow’s first gaggle (today) …
Pressed about the Justice Department ending a probe of the National Security Administration because lawyers couldn’t get security clearance, Snow reached for a red folder. “You’ll forgive me but I’ll do the talking points on this because, again, as the new kid on the block I’m not fully briefed into everything, but here it is.” After reading the legalese bullet points, he added, apologetically: “I hate to read from a sheet of paper.”
