Making A Good Case For God Playing Politics With Hurricanes

hurricanes

These days, any news of a hurricane with the potential to strike Florida can cause my (typically non-superstitious) mind to consider prophetic implications.

…That’s why, when I came across this graphic comparing this year’s hurricane paths with Florida’s 2000 county-by-county presidential voting results, I couldn’t help indulging in some cosmological speculation. On the dark side, I felt this data confirmed Florida as a genuine extension of the Devil’s Triangle (and, confirmedly much more weird than California.) On the faith-based side, it instilled in me the tremendously calming belief that God (with apologies to the Christian right) must be a Democrat.

That picture, while amusing, is wildly inaccurate.
For instance Charley’s path is shown going from Polk county into Lake county, then north and west up through Duval(Jacksonville) and out of FL. However, the actual path went from Polk to Orange(Orlando) and Oceaola counties, then north and west through Seminole and finally, Volusia(Daytona) county. The path of Frances is also innaccurate. It crossed over Central Florida, went into the Gulf, then hit the Panhandle. As for Ivan’s path, I’m less clear, being a resident of Central Florida, I’m just glad it hit ANYwhere but here.

Well, considering Ivan made landfall in ALABAMA, I think it’s safe to say that map is wishful thinking and poor humor.

Of course it’s wacky yet true that Ivan, having circled around, is now making a beeline for Texas!

This is an urban legend. See Snopes.com.

God hates Bush, there can be no doubt
Reborn Tropical Depression Ivan (don’t those ‘wingers jus’ LOVE the re-born!) packing 5 to 10 inches of rain, made its way inland late Thursday night near the Texas-Louisiana border (yep, they also voted for Bush in 2000).
Ivan originally came ashore in Alabama (Bush supporters) on September 15 as a major hurricane. It moved north through Alabama, Georgia and North Carolina (ALL Bush supporters) before turning and regaining strength as a tropical storm in the Gulf of Mexico. Meanwhile, Hurricane Jeanne is likely to strengthen and hit Florida this weekend (just you watch, it’ll only touch down in Republican districts again).
