Mike Meyers Does Dr. Suess: Our 3rd Favorite Piece Of Media Porn — November 2003

Dennis Roddy’s commentary on "The Cat In The Hat" ("The Frat in the Hat") in the Pittsburg Post-Gazette.com hits all the bases.

Ted Geisel, the author of the original story, would have been mortified to see this movie. Geisel used novel language play and subsersive plot to create wonder, as well as call into question the established social order. This movie uses stock double entrendre and sexual innuendo, geared toward teenagers and adults, as a vehicle to exploit young children who identify with Giesel’s book; promote Universal Studios; and push products through promotional tie-ins.

Roddy’s comment about the movie rating is also well taken. The fact that a movie version of “The Cat In The Hat” would require anything other than a “G” rating says something is wrong. (What is also interesting is how prudish this statement probably sounds. Disturbingly, our culture is so permeated with sex appeal, parents tend to dismiss the materiality of the problem as “nothng their kids aren’t exposed to every day.”)
